Sounds like Compiz. With no visual effects, does it still do that?

System > Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects --> None

If that fixes it, but you still want visual effects, use
CompizConfig Settings Manager. To install it, run

   sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Then run "ccsm":

Viewport Switcher > Desktop-based Viewport Switching

and disable "move next" and "move prev".
