That helps!

And it may be of interest to readers of this thread that I "solved?" my
printer compatibility problem - in a very unorthodox way.

I searched ebay for a local seller who offered a new printer that works
with Debian Etch.  And found a seller - who was glad to unload an
outdated model.  It arrived at my door within 36 hours of placing the
order and works like a charm.

End of story!
