I am getting closer to the time that I am going to buy a new laptop. My aim is to run a dual boot Ubuntu/ XP Windows laptop. I am looking at Toshiba laptops which are almost identical spec wise but the AMD is quite a bit cheaper. What I am looking for is most bang for my buck speed wise. Should I just be looking GHZ speed? Do I need 64 bit software to take advantage of the 64 bit processor? I have heard of problems with 64 bit versions of Ubuntu. Is Centrino a cut down verison of the standard Intel processor? Thanks for your help.

That makes a difference - but (within reason) not as much difference as how much RAM there is. Although that does depend on what you're using it for. A 64-bit processor can use more RAM than a 32-bit one. In general, too, a 64-bit processor is going to be faster than a 32-bit one. And a dual core will be faster than a single core of the same speed. > Do I need 64 bit software to take advantage of the 64 bit processor? Yes. Although you can run 32-bit software on a 64-bit machine. The 64-bit software will run faster though. > I have heard of problems with 64 bit versions of Ubuntu. I dunno about Ubuntu, but i've been using 64-bit versions of Fedora 9 and now 10 for about a year without any more problems than usual. > Is Centrino a cut down verison of the standard Intel processor? There's no such thing as a "standard" Intel processor. The Centrino is just one of a number of models of Intel processor. If you want laptop recommendations, after a year of solid use, i'm still very happy with my Lenovo Thinkpad R61. It's got a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB RAM. -- http://SnapAndScribble.com

Rob,
I am running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 8.04 ( Hardy) with no
problems. Initially I ran it as a WUBI installation with win xp OS,
also with no problems and I recommend the WUBI install if you have to
have windows as well as Linux.
Hopefully someone else will answer your hardware questions
Walter
