Hi I work under Suse 11, and I have an Olympus digital camera. It has on it a lot of shots from 2008, and some from 2009. I can confirm this by looking at them on the camera screen directly. However, when I hook up the camera to the laptop, it only sees the 2008 pictures. The 2009 ones seem not to be there at all. I thought maybe the laptop hasn't moved on to 2009, but it has. Any ideas what might be the reason for this? -- Dieter Britz

When I download them, the files have dates on them. I am not sure whether I can check what dates the camera itself gives them, must read the manual. > >>up the camera to the laptop, it only sees the 2008 >>pictures. Both, but again, the dates are on the jpg files after I download them. -- Dieter Britz

Is it a usb cable from the camera to the comptuer? Are you taking out the little memory card and plugging it in somehow (how) to your computer, etc. If the former, it may be that the most recent shots are stored in the camera and the old ones on the memeory card, or vice versa. OK: I connect the cable between the camera and the USB socket of the laptop, which is what I've always done. I don't have a slot for the memory card in the computer, and the USB connection has always worked up to now. The camera asks me whether I want to connect up, I say yes, and it appears as a device on the laptop, with a directory within another, and all the photos as jpg files in the inner one. Except, now, those shots I took since 31.12.08. When I check the photos in the camera itself, they are all there, in one stream/menu, whatever that's called. I think this means that they are in the same directory as the old, 2008, ones, but I can't be sure. However, there is no new directory shown on the laptop when I connect. Is that specific enough? What I was hoping is that someone else might have had this problem and knows what to do about it. Maybe there is an ng about cameras in the aus.-series, must check. I normally look at Danish ng's, since I live there, but have no access to them from here at Macquarie Uni, where I am for a few months. I'd like to send photos home, and put some up opn my web site, but so far, no luck except by a round-about procedure, downloading onto a Windows-based PC (where they are all visible), then copy to a USB stick, back to the laptop, etc. Laborious. I don't know about Olympus' > software, and don't think I need it. Yeah, that was a bit of a silly question, anyway - i forgot this was a linux newsgroup! What i'd do first would be pop up a terminal window and find out where the camera's mounted by doing mount and then do 'cd /media/camera' (replacing "/media/camera" with the path to where it's mounted). Then: find . | less which will list all files on that device. Check for the files that appear to be missing. If the photos that you see on the camera aren't all there then the camera's doing something weird. If they are, then the file browser you were looking at the with before is doing something weird. I assume the camera will show you the file name as well as the photo. You need to know specific file names to look for, as it will make this easier. If it's the camera (it would help here if you said *which* model it is) the only thing i can think of is that it's got some internal memory as well as a memory card (some point and shoot cameras do) and that all you're seeing is what's on the card (or what's in the internal memory). If that's the case, you may have to consult the camera's manual to find out what's going on. -- http://NovemberEchoRomeoDelta.com

It created files with names like "pc300040.jpg" :- - The "p" was for "picture". - The "c" was for the month = 12 (1, 2, 3, ..., 9, a, b, c). - The "30" was for the day of month. - The remaining digits were a sequential number for each photo. Note that the YEAR the picture was taken is NOT in the filename. So if you list the files alphabetically on the computer, photos taken in January 2009 will be mixed in among photos taken in January 2008 -- whereas the camera will probably show the photos in the order you took them. Try sorting the files by their modification time. In Nautilus, View > Arrange items > By modification date or in the terminal: "ls -ltr"

I've seen this before. Sometimes the system doesn't seem to be able to see the pics on the cameras own memory as well as on the inserted memory card at the same time. Take the momory card out and attach the camera again to see what happens next. jules Dieter Britz wrote: > Hi > > I work under Suse 11, and I have an Olympus digital > camera. I can now answer this myself {:]. Someone from another
ng suggested that the file names for 2008 and 2009 are
different. I thought that all shots would be in temporal
order, but it turns out that all 2009 ones start with
p1... whereas those for 2008 start with pb... so the
new shots come first in the directory listing, and I
didn't see that. Dumb, I know, but the upshot is that
they are all there, problem is solved (there never was
one). Sorry to exercise your wits.
