Do your Ph.D. research in the areas of Object Technology or Natural

Language Processing in a stimulating research environment.

The Microsoft Research Institute is an independent research centre

within the School of Mathematics, Physics, Computing and Electronics at

Macquarie University, Australia. MRI is offering up to four postgraduate

research awards commencing in the 1998 academic year.

Successful applicants will work within one of the two research groups:

Object Technology and Language Technology. Each group is led by a senior

researcher, who will act as the supervisor on a mutually agreed topic,

consistent with the group's research directions. Each group has other

research staff, and ongoing research students.

The Microsoft sponsorship of Ph.D. scholars at Macquarie University

commenced in 1992, and has attracted outstanding students. Award holders

to date have included six University Medallists, and all have attained

good First Class Honours. One scholar was awarded the Australian Ph.D.

thesis of the year award at the Australian Computer Science Conference

in 1997.

The Awards

There are two different types of award:

1. Microsoft Supplementary Awards for Research

2. Microsoft Postgraduate Research Awards

The first of these awards, the Supplementary Award, is designed to

supplement Australian Postgraduate Awards, or Macquarie University

Postgraduate Research Awards. It comprises a scholarship supplement of

$11,500 p.a., with a separate travel allowance of up to $11,000 for the

duration of the award. The eligibility criteria for this award

correspond to those of the APA or MUPGRA: applicants must either be an

Australian citizen, or hold Permanent Resident status in Australia; they

must hold, or expect to hold, a First Class Honours degree, or

equivalent.

The second award, the Postgraduate Research Award, is designed to

support those who are not eligible to apply for an Australian

Postgraduate Award, or a Macquarie University Postgraduate Research

Award. It provides a living allowance of $20,000 p.a.; in addition, a

travel allowance identical to that of the Supplementary Award is

included. Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a First Class Honours

degree, or equivalent; they must demonstrate good fluency in written and

oral communication in English. Overseas applicants should apply for a

Overseas Postgraduate Research Award from Macquarie University.

Microsoft Research Institute Postgraduate Research Awards Application

Procedure

To apply for a Microsoft postgraduate research award, you must do two

things:

1. request an applications pack and submit it by the due date, as

described below; and

2. contact the leader of the research group you are interested in

joining well ahead of the applications due date.

This second step is very important, because our decision procedure is

based on an informal interview as well as your paper application.

You should request an application pack via the means below; this pack

explains the applications procedure in detail. The closing date for

applications is Friday 24th October 1997. Completed applications should

be sent directly to MRI as described in the applications pack; you

should not apply via the usual channels. All applications will be

acknowledged and applicants will be advised of the outcome of their

application.

Interviews will be held face-to-face or by telephone as appropriate.

Offers will be made mid-December 1997 in conjunction with Macquarie

University's other postgraduate awards. In the absence of suitable

applicants, not all available awards may be allocated.
