Spend the summer vacation on a research project in Object Technology or
Natural Language Processing in a stimulating research environment.
The Microsoft Research Institute is an independent research centre
within the School of Mathematics, Physics, Computing and Electronics at
Macquarie University, Australia. MRI is offering up to two scholarships
for the approaching summer vacation.

Successful applicants will work within one of the two research groups:
Object Technology and Language Technology, under the guidance of a
research staff member.

The Scholarships

The MRI Vacation Scholarships are offered as part of the Macquarie
University Vacation Scholarships in Science program. The purpose of the
MRI Scholarships is to encourage students to pursue research programs in
the areas of interest to MRI.

Applicants should have completed at least their third year of a
bachelor's degree program in an appropriate field of study (typically
Computer Science or Linguistics), and at a superior level. The
Scholarship holder will undertake a research project, or other program,
as outlined in the offer of the Scholarship.

The Scholarships will be tenable for an agreed period of up to 12 weeks,
with a probationary period of 4 weeks.

The Scholarships will have a stipend of $250 per week (tax exempt).
Applications including a curriculum vitae, academic transcripts for
non-Macquarie students, and contact details for academic or professional
referees must be lodged with Microsoft Research Institute by Friday,
November 14, 1997. Preference may be given to students who intend to
proceed with an Honours program at their university; their MRI research
project may be adopted as their Honours project. Completing Honours
students are also eligible to apply. Applicants should include a brief
cover letter nominating either Object Technology or Language Technology
as their preferred area, outlining their interest in the area, and
indicating their intentions with respect to Honours and further research
work.
