FOR SALE:
SPARCstation 20/SX model 502 (Tatung clone)
dual 50 MHz SuperSPARC CPU's (SM50's)
SX 24-bit TrueColor graphics (8 MB VRAM, 1280x1024)
128 MB RAM (4x32)
Fast SCSI-2 I/O system
540 MB hard disk
10baseT & AUI ethernet
builtin ISDN (something a true Sun SS20 doesn't have)
floppy drive
Type-5 keyboard
optical mouse & pad
speaker-box
microphone
AUI breakout cable
power cable
monitor cable for BNC style monitor
manuals
No monitor is included, but the system will work with any
modern multisync monitor. I can suggest a place to buy a
cheap adaptor for a monitor which requires a HD15 connector.
This is a very nice, well balanced configuration. It would make an ideal
low-cost SPARC workstation for someone. Even by today's standards, the
dual SuperSPARC's provide plenty of CPU power for most tasks, such as
software development, system administration, and almost any network
services (NFS server, mail server, web server, NetaTalk & Samba etc).
The SX graphics system provides great TrueColor graphics for 2D work in
Photoshop etc, and of course no dithering in Netscape. With the addition
of a SunVideo card it also makes a great platform for video capture or
video conferencing. The SX will also run OpenGL 3D applications such as
Lightwave & VRwave. There is no specific 3D graphics hardware in the SX,
so 3D performance is similar to a Silicon Graphics Indy with XL
graphics.
There is also plenty of expansion available in the SPARCstation-20
design, if you want to upgrade it. The processors can be upgraded to as
many as quad HyperSPARC's, which would be around 4 times faster. There
are also 4 empty Sbus slots for expansion cards (video capture, fast
ethernet etc etc), plus 3 free RAM slots for extra memory, and 1 free
3.5 inch internal hard disk bay.
A fresh installation of Solaris 7 is currently installed on the machine,
but the Solaris 7 CD's are not included. Alternatively, I can sell the
machine with Solaris 2.6 installed and the CD's included with the
system.
Note that Sun will supply Solaris 7 free-of-charge for non-commercial
use.
The highest bidder will get this system. I'm not sure exactly how much
to
ask for it, probably somewhere around $2000 I think, but submit what you
think it's worth.

Imagine that CRAY decides to make a personal computer. It contains 16
Alpha based processors executing in parallel, has 800 megabytes of RAM,
9 Gigabytes of disk storage, a resolution of 4096 x 4096 pixels, does
24bit 3D graphics in realtime, relies entirely on voice recognition for
input, fits in your shirt pocket and costs $300. What is the first
question the computer community asks?
"Is it DOS compatible?"
