using parallel port on 501-1203 ALM-2 card

I've recently acquired a 501-1203 ALM-2 16-port serial multiplexer card,
and one of the features of this card is that it also has a parallel
printer port.

For want of experimentation, I've been trying to send files out via this
port to my printer just using 'cat' and output redirection. Something as
simple as 'cat somefile > /dev/mcpp0' should work as far as I can tell,
however it appears to be producing no output since the printer doesn't
respond at all, and the process will just sit there and hang.

Most times I cannot kill the process, even when I send it a SIGKILL
signal. This suggests the process is blocking on i/o, but I'm not sure how
to approach the problem from the software side of things.

Of course I should be printing via the line printer daemon, but if simple
access to the port fails I expect using 'lpr' will too.

I'll be checking out the signals on the parallel connector on the card
when I have the time to see what happens when I try to print something.
This might give a clue as to whether it's a hardware or a software
misnomer.

If anyone has experience working with the printer port on ALM-2 cards I'd
be interested to know if you've had any problems and how you were able to
solve them. In the meantime, I'll keep trying to work out what's wrong...

Regards,

Craig.
