Solaris x86 config question

#6543

I'm planning on purchasing the academic edition
of Solaris x86 (which costs, at A$141, about as
much as I paid for Windows 2.03 all those years
ago :)).

Before I do it, I want to make sure that my
hardware configuration is acceptable for doing
development work (with gcc presumably, as I don't
think that price buys you the Sun compiler).
I'd like to run X too, although I'm not fussed
with the desktop stuff.

I have a 486SX33 with 16MB RAM and (soon) an
850MB IDE disk. I'll get a SCSI disk/controller
if it's *really* necessary. I only have an Oak
1MB SVGA card, which is acceptable in Windoze
(and XFree) at 800x600x16 but doesn't appear to
be supported by Solaris. Hopefully this is
something which can be cheaply replaced.

Also - the quote Sun gave me was for 2.4. They
said they'd have to order it from the States; it
appears that x86 2.5 is out there. Short of asking
Sun Australia (they're on hols at the moment :))
does anyone know anything about its availability
here?

thanks,

luke.
