Your environment sound as is you have one segment with two routers and
all of your hosts. Your hosts a shared across your routers via explicit
default gateway statements in their ip configs.

If this is the case then you may be interested in the following.

For ROUTER FAILURE

We have just install a pair of routers onto the same ethernet segment.
All hosts are shared to two different IP address for their default gateway.
We then configure Hot Standby Router Protocol on each router.

Each router is the active for one address and standby for the other.

This means that if one router fails the other will automatically takeover
the responsibility for servicing the standby address. It also means that
the hosts will not need to run expensive ( collective output traffic and
input processing) routing processes.

For LINK FAILURE

You should consider a link state routing protocol such as OSPF or EIGRP.
