I dont know about the driver but make sure the ID number for your NEC is =>4.
ID numbers <4 default to  SCSI-I instead of SCSI-II.  

This caused me a tremendous amount of grief on another platform.  It also 
appears that the CDR84 yeilds higher throughput with the SCSI-II command set.
At least my throughtput nearly doubled once I rejumpered the drive.
