Hi Peter,

Sometimes centering of PostScript figures can be a problem if the
"%%BoundingBox: llx lly urx ury" (I think that's right) sizes are wrong;
so you might check those first ... one way is to add the PostScript
code to draw a line around the bounding box, for example:

llx lly moveto % where "llx" and "lly" are the X, and Y coordinates of the
llx ury lineto % lower left corner, as specified in the %%BoundingBox, and
urx ury lineto % where "urx" and "ury" are the X, and Y coordinates of the
urx lly lineto % upper right corner, as specified in the %%BoundingBox.
llx lly lineto
show

Another package you might try instead of "psfig", is "epsf".
To include an Encapsulated PostScript File, I use the following:

\documentstyle[12pt,epsf]{article} %%% Have not tried this with "amsbook"
%
\begin{document}

% etc., etc., etc.

\begin{figure}[htbp]
  \centering
  \leavevmode        %%  leave "v" mode
  \epsfbox{fig1.ps}
  \caption{Whatever ...\label{figone}}
\end{figure}

% etc., etc., etc.

\begin{figure}[htbp]
  \centering
  \leavevmode        %%  leave "v" mode
  \epsfbox{fig2.ps}
  \caption{And so on ...\label{figtwo}}
\end{figure}

% etc., etc., etc.

\end{document}

I hope that is of some help.

Best regards,

Lawson Hanson
