The Australian National University CENTRE FOR INFORMATION SCIENCE RESEARCH PUBLIC LECTURE THE EYE AND THE HAND: DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING IN THE MONKEY BRAIN Professor Michael A. Arbib University of Southern California Thursday 11 February 1993 8:00 PM Leonard Huxley Lecture Theatre Mills Road, ANU Michael Arbib is one of the world's most distinugished neuro scientists. He is a professor in six different departments at the University of Southern California - the Departments of Computer Science, Neurobiology, Physiology, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Psychology. He is the founder and first Director of USC's Center for Neural Engineering. He has also played a leading role in developing the Computational and Cognitive Neuroscience components of USC's interdepartmental program in Neural, Informational and Behavioral Sciences (NIBS). He is the author, co-author or editor of around 20 books. He is visiting ANU in connection with the 1993 Robertson Symposium "Sensory Stratagems". In his lecture Professor Arbib will provide a general overview of recent research bringing together studies of human and monkey behavior, neurological observations, monkey neurophysiology and the development of multi-level computational models combining schema models of distributed computation with models of reinforcement learning in neural networks. The talk will be at the Scientific American level, designed to introduce the basic concepts to a general audience. Enquiries: Phone 2492035 or 2492209
