So are you saying that if police were set up to catch a bank robber that
they had been tipped off about, and you noticed the guy get out of his car
with a balaclava on, and you somehow stopped him from robbing the bank and
possibly shooting people, possibly himself (or the other way around in
Victoria), then you've committed a crime?

Surely interfering in a police operation means causing the operation to
fail [to catch the bad guys] as opposed to preventing the crime.
