I am writing a thesis, and would like to be able to align
numbers in some tables in as I have seen in some journals.
The case is where the heading text (which I would like
centred) is wider than the numbers (which I would like right-
aligned).
For example:
First class
rhubarb
40
231
12
6
etc. The only way I can see to set the above is something
like:
\begin{tabular}{p{2em}rp{2em}}
\multicolumn{3}{c}{First class} \\
\multicolumn{3}{c}{rhubarb} \\
& 40 & \\
& 231 & \\
etc. where the dimension shown here as 2em may need to be adjusted.
Is there a neater way to achieve this? Is this idea typographically
unsound?
