Public Domain Versions of TeX?

I find it a real mess trying to type all those mathematical formulas
using the ordinary wordprocessor. I have seen the wonders of TeX but
my department is short of funds to acquire such an expensive software.
I wonder whether anyone out there have come across Public Domain Versions
of TeX..like SBTeX or EMTeX..which I heard are available free of charge.
It would be great help if someone can pass the relevant info.

Thanks in advance
