What is the advantage of installing Foxtel - apart from getting more
channels?
Digital TV now provides more channels, even if some, eg the History
channel, may be missing.
My wife and I subscribed to Foxtel once, but found we ended up watching
the same ones we got for free anyway - being too busy to catch up with much
else.
And what does the Black Box do?

We threw it out years ago . with hundreds of interesting channels
available through a modest dish why pay , ip tv is a cheap workable
alternative which most people find better performing
The black box is a simple interface to your service as you know

Access to some content that doesn't appear on free-to-air.

The channels and content on free-to-air are still quite different from
Foxtel.

In that case, Foxtel is probably no advantage to you. To some people,
particularly those who watch a lot of sport, it can be.

In simple terms, it decrypts and converts the signal that comes via the
satellite or cable to a form that a TV can make sense of. If it's an iQ,
it can also record it on hard disk.

# Yes, I've heard that adverts have been introduced since we used Foxtel.
Yet one reason you'd install "pay-TV" is that the broadcaster funding,
which is inherent in commercial ads, is not needed - the broadcaster gets
its income from your monthly payment.
So, why bring in ads, if not to merely increase income (ie. sheer
greed)?
And, of course, commercial ads are SO sophisticated! (Interrupting
programs)
No doubt, SBS feels much happier now they have them (Needed due to lack
of govt funding)

# I've now checked with my local Telstra shop, with these results:
1) Installation cost is $200, which involves a technician calling at your
premises to install the black box, and see that everything is working
properly.
2) Monthly fee starts at $45 - or more (depending on how many extra features
you want).
3) Black box is currently geared to supply the modern digital TV receiver.
4) There is no discount for pensioners.
If the monthly fee was, say, $20, then I, as a pensioner, might
subscribe.
Otherwise, I regard Foxtel as a rich man's hobby.

I think he was talking about free-to-air digital, but that's really no
match for Foxtel as far as content is concerned.
