For those of you contemplating a service provider in AZ, let me summarize my two month experience with AZdud oops AZstarnet: a) sysop ignores customer mail. unix support is virtually uavailable from phone support (they don`t know unix). Phone support promises to call you back, then doesn't b) sysop puts cute "happy day" message on menu; then someone with su privileges puts a "happy days" file in my directory with a hidden embedded character in it. When sysop is queried, he says its "a joke"?! c) lag times for tin newsreader are often as long as 2 full minutes for threading articles after group is selected. Tech support tries to c) lag times for tin newsreader are often as long as 2 full minutes for threading articles after group is selected. Tech support tries to blame this on my equipment, which works fine for other systems using the same newsreader. d) called one weeknight and was told there was no sysop or high level tech person watching the system, I repeat *no one* was there to oversee operations, according to their phone support people. e) was essentially told that shell accounts were not important because they constitute a small percentage of all accounts. f) No motd for over 2 months although a place for it appears on the menu. g) was told today that there is no person in charge of the overall operations of AZstarnet only separate departments. h) shell users pay same rate as xwindows people but have no established line of support; no one person responsible for answering shell/unix questions. Meanwhile AZstarnet keeps puffing up their media blitz about all the great things at AZstarnet. Their advertised search mechanism for the wire services is severely limited in that many of the so-called search articles turn up as "untitled" so that the user has no idea of the relevance of those articles and must download each in turn, defeating the whole purpose of a search. Keep looking guys, as I have yet to see a really *good* AZ provider especially true for Tucson. About 1 hour after complaining about their level of service to their so-called customer support head, who doesn`t know unix, my mail posting functions were inoperative. Guess free speech only applies when its the AZ Daily Star newspaper?!
