Qualix is working on implementing the Xview API on top of Motif. It seems to us that there are an enormous number of products built on the easy-to-use Xview API and transitioning them to the...ahem... more complex API of Motif is not going to be easy. However, we think we can implement the Xview API on top of Motif and are working on doing so. Our porduct will let developers continue to use the Xview API for the indefinite future and still get a Motif applications out of it. If you think your organization would be interested in such a thing, I would be interested in your answers to the following questions (email to me, please - dshaker@qualix.com): I think an Xview API for Motif is: _ Brilliant, it will save me loads of time. Xview forever! _ Good idea, will you support Openlook Xview, too? _ OK, but it is a short term fix. _ A stupid idea. What a hoser! What OS version would you want this to operate on: _ SunOS 4.1.x _ Solaris 2.1 for Sparc _ HPUX for 9000/700 _ AIX for RS/6000 _ SCO _ Decstation/Ultrix _ Univel Unix _ Something else:_______________________ How soon do you need to get it before it is no longer useful to you? _ I need it yesterday. _ I need it by the end of July. _ I need it by the end of the September. _ I need it before my customers start to really use Solaris 2 and I think that will be__________________. _ I need it by the end of 1993. _ I don't really need it. If you think your company would use it, how much time do you think it would save your group in development effort: _ Hours of labor _ Days of labor _ Weeks of labor _ Months of labor _ Years of labor _ Lifetimes of labor How much should it cost?____________________________ Thanks for the answers! Let's hope this works. - Doug Shaker voice: 415/572-0200 fax: 415/572-1300 email: dshaker@qualix.com mail: Qualix Group 1900 S. Norfolk St., #224 San Mateo, CA 94403

This is an entirely subjective opinion based on a) what you learned
first, and b) where your vested interests lie. I am not sure that
Motif is harder to code than Xview, in fact, it's been the opposite
for me.

^---somewhere in between these two...

X none of the above, Xview code needs to be brought
into complaince with the accepted de-facto industry
standard of Motif's API. The fact is that if a
company invests in their humans (e.g. training)
then they will have a skilled crew who can make
lean solid Motif code in a fairly short turnaround.
Smart people far outweigh GUI builders in their
delivered benefit here. A well designed UI does
not take that long to crank out, the engine underneath
and it's UI hooks are, IMHO, a larger task sometimes.

Hmmm...well, good luck. I guess I was never too keen on Xview.
I'm sure I'm guilty of some personal bias as well, as are we all,
so don't let me rain on anyone's parade.
