Bell central office out to get me.

Help,

I'm just about at my wits end. I think someone at Bell is sabotaging me!

For the last 2 months I've had the following symptoms.

Every hour at 20 minutes to the hour (40 minutes after) I stop receiving
incoming packets from the Alcatel Speed Touch modem. (The rcv light stops
flashing). I have to wait at least 5 minutes then disconnect (since I never
loose sync, the modem doesn't know I've lost the connection) and then
reconnect. After that the connection will be great for another 55 minutes.

Bell and my ISP (dsl.ca) both deny it is their equipment. ( I'm sure it's
Bell's)
I know its not mine because I can take my computer and my modem to my office
(where I have another account with DSL.ca) and log on just fine, and never
loose the connection. Alternatively, I take my office equipment home and log
in, and experience the same problem. I think this experiment proves it's not
DSL.CA's equipment either. It HAS TO BE SOMETHING AT THE CO. But what?

Does anybody know much about ATM systems and Redback SMS to be able to shed
some light on this?

cheers,
darryl

Have you tried unplugging EVERYTHING except the modem from the phone line
and see if the problem still exists? It sounds like you've got an
unfiltered timed device accesssing the line, perhaps an alarm system or a
satellite receiver or something like that. TTYL

Sure have, even though all I have are harmony phones, no satellites, no
noth'in. Also there is NEVER any loss of sync. At the appointed time the rcv
LED abruptly stops flashing while the xmt continues. The sync LED is solid
always, and my PPPoE software never sees the a connection drop. Any other
ideas?

Do a traceroute (tracetr in windows) then set up a ping to the first
hop up line from your modem and see if that dies during this outage. Repeat
moving up the hop list until you find where the connection dies. Come to
think of it ping your local interface too in case Windows is deciding to
turn down the local interface for some reason.

I can telnet into the modem any time. That is unaffected. There is not much
point doing the trace route. My ISP knows the connection is lost in what
they term a "non-gracious disconnect". Therefore, not having an IP address
myself, it will be very difficult to receive anything. Good idea though. Got
any more?

This is probably bad main equipment at the Bell office and you must REALLY
push them hard to change it.

could be:
1. line card for your line
2. another bigger po equipment, OE stuff

Then they should be bitching at Bell about the "non-gracious disconnect"
I expect. It does sound like the CO has a problem of some kind. I'd expect
that to be raising an alarm on the telco side though (and perhaps it is but
its being ignored). There wouldn't appear to be anything more you can do
(except document what you have done to the telco which may or may not get
you anywhere ...). There may also be finger pointing going on between your
ISP and Bell (the old "its your fault" game by both of them). I know from
experience that it can be very hard to get the attention of a telco ...

It's your line most likely. Are you positive that your physical line is
extremely clean
and that it's been recently put in. It sounds like you're experiencing the
good ol'
Sync, No surf scenario. This happens with the Alcatel SpeedTouch Homes when
the line is not clean or is kind of old. I used to have that happen to me
alot when
I lived in an older part of town. I can't say that it doesn't happen more
or less now
because I'm not longer a bridged account.

From this you can see that everything is cool right up until 17:40:37 when
Bell's ATM network sends a terminate request message! <ARG> which I
dutifully acknowledge.<GRRRR>. There is nothing after this from them.

Anyway, I passed this on to Bell and my ISP and now they will finally get
BellNexxia (The guys with the backbone) to look at.

Damn, how the hell would I have found this without a packet sniffer?

cheers,
darryl

Cheryl, I think this is thread involving Bell Canada, or something up
that way. Not sure why it is cross posted here (even though its
interesting). Sounds like a Redback bug that LB wrestled with for a
while.

Darryl,

Are you positive about the (dest)(source) data order ??

I'm watching my PPP Link Control Protocol echo request and reply using
Ethereal right now, and my PPPoE client initiates LCP echo requests once
every 20 seconds, and the BellSouth Redback replies to my requests 13 ms
later. I never see echo requests initiate from BellSouth's Redback.

If your (dest)(source) are reversed, then your PPP client initiated the
disconnect...

You are correct, it is Bell Canada.

I hate trying to solve problems inside of a vacuum. That's why I cross
posted it. To query as many minds as I could on a problem which could have
happened elsewhere as well.... like... What's this Redback bug of which you
speak? Please tell me more!

cheers,
darryl

That's been quite a while ago, so I doubt it is the same bug, but
certainly looks similar. This goes quite a ways back, and BellSouth may
use a somewhat different configuration. But as I recall, what was
happening that whatever keepalive mechanism that was used, the Redback
was ignoring the client replies, and thus terminating the connection
willy nilly. I don't think the details would help you that much (even if
I knew them all).

Darryl

Thanks for the .gif ... sure looks like the handshake is initiated by the
Redback...

It's just the opposite here in Birmingham, AL w/BellSouth.Net ... my client
initiates it..

.. interesting ...

specfic time..... i have run into similar troubles.... one customer had a
burglar alarm. He didnt think about it because he discontinued the monitoring
service years ago. The burglar alarm was still connected to the phone line and
was programed to test the intergertiy of the phone line at certain times. It
tested the phone line by goin off hook, pausing then resetin. there was no
filter on the alarm. i disconnect the "unused alarm no further troubles.
Another customer had several task scheduled in the pc he was unaware of...The
pc was not losing sync or droping the adsl connection... it was just using all
avaible resources for the other applications running in the background. things
like automatic maintaince , scan disk, defrag, check email, check for software
updates. napster access, etc etc..
Still another customer was losing sync....everything his pool heater "fired up"
he had a brownout . The pc was on a ups but not his modem....
My point is this.... it does not have to be a central office trouble.Could
be...but does not HAVE to be...
call the help desk say 5pm have them take a footprint of your modem before it
fails... then at the time it fails...have them take another footprint...
also ask them when your dynamic ip address changes.....
