Thanks to everyone who responded to my survey posted last Friday, April 4.
I received 15 responses that were informative and largely supportive.
I am still looking for input about my project however. Truth be told, I
was expecting many more responses given the number of cyclists on the 'net
and the interest cyclists usually take in all things cycling related.
So... I've included a copy of the original survey below. Please respond by
e-mail by April 14th. Thanks!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ORIGINAL SURVEY:
Im looking for help with some research Im doing. Im checking out the
viability of a Web publication that will list bicycle tour companies and
their tours.
This service will be comprehensive: there will be no charge for tour
companies to participate--this free advertising should attract both large
international companies and smaller local operators. It will be
responsive: the site will be driven by a database that will be constantly
updated by myself and directly by tour companies. It will be fun: sections
of the site will be interactive--they will support libraries of anecdotes
and touring tips submitted by readers. And of course it will be FREE for
all to browse on the Web. The enterprise will cover its costs through
sponsorship and some cycling-related advertising.
I wish to know if this service would be of use to cyclists on the internet.
Please take a few minutes to answer some or all of the following 7
questions. Thanks.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Ive set up the questions so you can simply quote them back to me and
delete the responses that are not appropriate. Feel free to leave more
than one response per question in place if it applies.
1. IN THE PAST, I HAVE PARTICIPATED IN:
a commercial bicycle tour
a club-organized bicycle tour (of greater than one day in length)
a self-organized bicycle tour ( )
no bicycle touring at all
2. IN THE FUTURE, I HAVE PLANS TO PARTICIPATE IN:
a commercial bicycle tour
a club-organized bicycle tour (of greater than one day in length)
a self-organized bicycle tour ( )
no bicycle touring at all
3. IN THE FUTURE, I CAN IMAGINE MYSELF PARTICIPATING IN:
a commercial bicycle tour
a club-organized bicycle tour (of greater than one day in length)
a self-organized bicycle tour ( )
no bicycle touring at all
4. I AM CURIOUS ABOUT:
the bicycle tours offered by commercial companies
the bicycle tours offered by bike clubs
bicycle tours others have organized for themselves
all sorts of things but not bicycle tours
5. IN THE PAST, I HAVE USED THE WEB TO RESEARCH:
a vacation or travel
a travel-related purchase
a cycling-related purchase
another type of purchase
another subject
nothing at all
6. IN THE PAST, I HAVE USED THE WEB TO MAKE:
a travel-related purchase
a cycling-related purchase
another type of purchase
no purchases
7. I WOULD VISIT THE BICYCLE TOURING WEBSITE DESCRIBED ABOVE:
to check it out at least once
to browse the bicycle tour listings
to browse the posted anecdotes and tips
when planning my vacation
when considering booking a bicycle tour
to post anecdotes or touring tips
on a regular basis
not at all
Please reply by e-mail to avoid burdening this newsgroup. I have taken the
liberty of cross-posting this message to a number of other cycling-related
groups. My apologies for the clutter if you subscribe to more than one of
these, but what better way to contact cyclists on the 'net than through
the 'net!
Thanks for taking the time to check out this posting.

P.S. Your responses will be treated as confidential; I will promptly
delete them from my hard drive after they have been counted.
