In addition, the Fire Department is Smithers is a volunteer one and there are questions of liability involved if they fought a fire outside the Smithers Fire Protection Area. They did, however, send a rescue unit to the fire in question and do so for any fire outside the FPA when requested to respond to a life-threatening situation. The trailer in question was the third such fire in that park this year and this fall we will be having a municipal referendum on extending the fire protection area to cover that far out of town.
