I'd check with USR. About 8 months ago (last summer, at least), there was
an article in one of the trade rags (August edition of Computer Reseller
News, if memory serves me correctly) that said that USR announced problems
with 28.8 Sportsters. When in "terminal mode" (whatever the heck that
nonsense means), the modem would see pauses of up to 30 seconds, and this
would cause carriers to drop, etc. I may even be misquoting the problem.
I'd suggest contacting USR for details. They may have a flashrom upgrade
you can get.
