This is a call for discussion about gatewaying CHINA-NT@UGA and the usenet newsgroup talk.politics.china. Currently a one-way gateway between the two groups already exists, which was done by adding the usenet mail gateway address talk.politics.china@usenet.ucs.indiana.edu into the subscriber list of CHINA-NT@UGA. The current discussion is for upgrading the gateway to a two-way gateway. The following is excerpted from a message I just posted to CHINA-NT: Some background info for unaware netters: for a while now, the messages from China-NT has been relayed to the usenet newsgroup talk.politics.china, but the articles are not relayed in the opposite direction. Netters on the both groups have been actively participating in the discussions of many topics related to Chinese politics. However, it has been very frustrating that the responses posted to talk.politics.china are often not seen by the author of the messages being replied to since they are on CHINA-NT. So here I would like to propose that a two-way gateway be established between CHINA-NT and talk.politics.china, i.e., all messages on talk.politics.china will be relayed to China-NT just as all messages on China-NT are relayed to talk.politics.china now. This measure will result in an increase in traffic volume for China-NT. However, this increase probably will not be overwhelming since the majority of articles appear on talk.politics.china in recent weeks has been China-NT relays. It is also my hope that the relaying of talk.politics.china articles will help dilute the non-China related articles which have been rather prevalent on China-NT nowadays, although I can't guarantee that this hope is fulfillable. Followups are directed to bit.admin and talk.politics.china. Ya-Gui Wei

Unseen messages are very frequently a problem in a different way as well. There are a large number of subscribers to the mailing list who do not unsubscribe when not reading the messages for months at a time. The unread messages from a high volume list can fill up the disk storage on computers with many subscribers to the list. Reading the messages with a newsreader solves that problem quite nicely. Please do make this change.

To transit from listserv to newsgroup is different from two-way
relaying. There are readers who may no have the access to usenet and
readers who do not want to receive large volume of mails every day
through mailing list that may have even slightly defference in their
topics in discussion. and these people may not want to be "restricted"
by certain newsgroups.
While two-way relaying between tpc and china-nt is considered to
be not so appropriate, one way routing from china-nt to tpc should be
regarded as making little sense. Therefore I support disconnection from
china-nt to tpc. I don't want to double check each time where the
posting was originated before I do the followup.
