RFD: change of name from bit.listserv.medforum to sci.med.medforum

I am the list owner of Medforum (medforum@arizvm1), which is bidirectionally gated to bit.listserv.medforum. Arizvm1 is ceasing listserv support, so Medforum will be moving to a new host soon. (We already have a host; this is not a beg-for-host message.) The newsgroup is moderated by listserv, therefore when the group changes hosts, a newgroup msg will need to be sent out to update the address for submissions. At the same time, I would like to consider the possibility of renaming the usenet group from bit.listserv.medforum to sci.med.medforum, which I believe would be a more appropriate name. bit.listserv.medforum was created at a time when all listserv-usenet gated groups were named and placed in the bit.listserv.* hierarchy. When that policy ceased some time ago, I did not ask to change the name of the group because it seemed like an esoteric consideration and not worth the inconvenience to usenet administrators that it would generate. However, as I said, since the upcoming host change will necessitate a newgroup msg anyway, I think that now is the time to change the name. -- Jim Marco -- doc@uiuc.edu Medforum list owner

Not necessarily. All we reallly have to do is notify the mailpath sites (via David Lawrence at uunet) and update the file we post monthly. I generally send out a newgroup control message so news admins will notice the change, but it is not required. > At the same time, I would like to consider the possibility of > renaming the usenet group from bit.listserv.medforum to sci.med.medforum, > which I believe would be a more appropriate name. You'll need to go through the standard usenet procedure for establishing a new newsgroup. The complete procedure is posted regularly to the news.* newsgroups and involves a formal proposal, some period for discussion and then a vote. The whole process with take two or three months to complete. Then, if the outcome of the vote is sucessful, the new newsgroup can be created and the gateway changed.
