I got no response when I asked this the first time, so I'll try again. We have an application that needs to be informed if someone inserts or removes the tape cartridge from a QIC tape drive. Does the AIX SCSI driver detect this (it must!), and can the user process be signalled when it happens? If not, is there an ioctl I can issue periodically to see if the status of the drive has changed since my last known operation? The ability for a SCSI device to notify a host of something like
this wasn't added until SCSI 2 (AEN or Asynchronous Event Notification).
I've not yet seen any QIC drives that support this feature.

Well, assuming AIX supports BSD style ioctls, how about MTIOCGET?
The driver might check the status when you execute this ioctl;
at least some Unix versions do so.
