I didnt even know there was a list for autism but the issue has come up with regard to programming. It usta be, that 'geek' meant a socially inept guy with an obscure or even occult talent with computers. I've worked with assembly code, and it is a lot like Chess. And like with Chess masters, social skills are not needed to be successful. Many of the greatest masters were very eccentric men. Because I happened to have a modicum of social skill, I was elected pres of my high school chess club. but I recall quite clearly how emotionally inept my friends were. But, from time to time, throughout history, problems have arisen in which social ineptitude is a gift. I have been in the basements with geeks, who are perfectly comfortable in withdrawing from the family and all other associations, and that enables them to use the powers of concentration, a kind of tunnel vision of the mind, to focus more closely than otherwise possible, and arrive at a solution which a normally socialized mind would never be able to do. The reason I was there, is that I was one of the few people who could understand what the fuck he was doing. I am no genius, but I have enough talent to be able to recognize it. I have not followed the autism list, but if anyone there does not know of a study done in Mexico's Yaqi valley, showing the connection between the phyto-estrogens which result from the breakdown of agribusiness chemicals, and the resulting increase in the rate of autism among Indian boys in the valley, while their kin in the nearby mountains develop normally, .... The FDA has tested chemicals for cancer, it has not done so to find out if they affect the development of children. The estrogen causes precocious sexuality in girls, and just drives the boys nuts. It is abundant in junk and fast food. But from the standpoint of autistic boys, what should be aimed at in adulthood is a communal living system which can provide challenges in the form of the linear thinking talents which they may develop. I see a similar kind of development in high tech, where geeks are setting up partnerships with socially adept women to run the office and communicate with the customer base to set the priorities of what should be developed, what problems need to be solved. I dont see autism as a binary phenomena, like an infection which one either has, or has not. To one degree or another, the classic geeks have all been autistic at one time or another. Motivating them has been a very difficult challenge. They dont care about money. They dont have any girl friends, dont expect to have any, and so they dont need a big fast car and nice clothes. And as the prices of the stuff they do care about, electronic and computer partss, keeps going down, they need even less. In recent years, the astronomical amount of money which some have generated has caught the attention of women. I detect male actors who would otherwise be stud muffins, try to adopt geek mannerisms, and present themselves as geeks that women are attracted to. I expect there is a kernel of truth in it, otherwise there'd be no geeks left in the gene pool at all. What I think is already going on, is that within these entrepeneurial organizations, the women see that if an outsider woman gets a vaginal orfice around one of their boys, his allegiance and priorities will be dramatically shifted. I think this is a clue to the possible treatment of autistic boys as they pass puberty and hormones kick in. What you wanna do with autistic geeks is get their attention, and no other force offers so much promise. The setup is a lot like a whorehouse, the satisfaction of primal needs without the complexity of relationship which the geek is not very good at. Nevertheless, if the geek has a room in the house to withdraw to to work on his craft, he will do that, and the whores can take care of his routine needs, food, clothing, etc as well. The payoff comes in three ways, one- the geek may be scccessful at unraveling incredibly complex problems, two- he is not distracted from that task with the incredibly complex nature of emotional relationships, and three- the economic good it may do could support the expenses of the whole thing. Chess is like code carving, but it rarely runs more than a couple hours or more than fifty moves. I have worked on assembly programs of several hundred moves across months of effort. And every time I sit down to look at it, it is like looking at a chess position; it takes a while before you even realize what the problems are, much less have a clue as to what the solution is. have someone come in the room wanting attention, and it is like sweeping the pieces off the table. Hours worth of mental work can be lost in a few seconds. I dont know what positions have attracted the attention of autistic boys, but I do see that they are not happy to be interrupted while they are trying to work something out. I cant say whether the problems they see are worthwhile either. Innovation is a crap shoot. In both the physical sciences, and the social sciences. But if you do succeed, it changes life dramatically.
