Here at The Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health we do not charge our student PC users for printing. We have three PC labs, each with an HP IIISi printer (approximately 55 PCs) which get quit a workout. I have heard about a site that charges 5 cents a page. I assume they keep the printer behind a counter and collect the money before giving out the printout. Of course this would require a body to monitor the printer, collect the money, and dispense the output. Depending on your network, you could implement userids and queue all output in a print queue. Then you could release jobs to print as someone comes to pick them up. A policy could be developed and communicated to your users that print files would only be retained for 'x' period (hours, days, weeks) and then purged. But is it really worth it?
