Of course, in the old days there was debate about the mailing list.
SOme would be adamant about wanting the list, because for their
reasons they wanted a mailing list rather than a newsgroup.  The
others were adamant about a newsgroup, because for their reasons they
preferred newsgroups.  When the mailing list was going to and from
the newsgroup, both had their way.  When the spam got too bad, the
mailing list in effect isolated itself.

The newsgroup's dead not because it's full of spam these days,
there's been little of it considering that the newsgroup is fairly
dead at this point (usually, spam seems to take over dead newsgroups),
but because there's not enough discussion to keep it sustained.  A
computer that hasn't been made in about fifteen years, there aren't
many people coming to the  computer, and hence the newsgroup.  Combine
that with the discussion going on elsewhere, and there's no critical
mass.
