Dear Colleague:
The Jose Marti International Institute of Journalism (IIPJM) has
organized the FIRST WORLD WAR CORRESPONDENTS ENCOUNTER,
to be held Nov 24 - Nov 27, 1998.
We would like to have representatives from your group here to
share common experiences. The meeting will try to bring together
the largest possible group of journalists, researchers and
families of journalists killed in action.
The encounter will be a forum for professional and ethical
discussion, as well as a call for peace from those who have
lived and narrated war through images, text and voices.
There will be parallel events including the screening of war
documentaries, photo exhibits and homages to those who have
given their lives to secure information for their readers,
viewers or listeners.
I enclose a pamphlet with the esssential data from the
Organizing Committee, and we will gladly answer any questions.
Until we see eachother in Havana,
Guillermo Cabrera Alvarez
IIPJM General Director

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS
World War Correspondents Encounter
November 24-27, 1998
Havana, Cuba
The Jose Marti International Institute of Journalism (IIPJM),
Cuban Journalists Union (UPEC), and other national and
international co-sponsors invite you to this unique
opportunity to meet each other and exchange experiences.
The event coincides with the respective 100 and 30th year
anniversaries of the Spanish-Cuban-US War in 1898 and Che
Guevara's foundation of Radio Rebelde in the Sierra Maestra.
All people who have risked their lives spreading truth in
high-risk situations have had similar experiences.
Let's come together and share them under the theme of :
THOSE WHO HAVE LIVED WAR DEFEND PEACE!
Topics at the Encounter will include, but are not limited to:
1. New informational technology in War Journalism;
the search for news in conflicts.
2. The journalist as a peacekeeper, fighter and in negotiations.
3. The image of War as a memoir of human history.
4. International Humanitarian Law;
journalistic ethics in high-risk actions.
5. Globalization and commercialization of war in mass media,
and the manipulation of information in armed conflict.
There will be simultaneous personal and collective expositions
of war photos, documentaries and films.
Interested participants should send a 30 line summary before
November 1, so the Organizing Committee can form the work
groups.
Photographers must submit the number and sizes of photos
to be shown, as well as the areas of conflict where they were
taken. Mounting will be responsibility of exhibitors.
Film makers and camera operators interested in projecting
their work must communicate the content and technical
requirements of their films or videos.
SPECIAL INVITATION FOR ALL
In addition to the printing of the conference findings,
it is the intention of the Organizing Committee to publish one
or more volumes of experiences from participants, including
those who cannot be present.
"The Name of War," with text and graphics, will donate all
profits after publishing costs to the International Red Cross
children's war victim fund.
This will be a contribution to those who have always been
on the side of the victims, in the hope of a definitive
"Farewell to Arms."
Writers and Journalists must deliver a maximum of 100 lines on
each conflict they've covered.
Photographers will be limited to five images for each conflict
All participants will receive a complimentary copy of the book.
