*CALL FOR PAPERS* Borders and Cultures Conference Graduate Program in Communications McGill University Montreal, CANADA 21-26 Feb. 1995 We live at a moment in history when geographic boundaries crumble under the assault of economic requisites or mutate under the pressure of transnational ethnic loyalties. Politically, borders serve as a place of division; socially and culturally, borders have tended to serve as a kind of magnet where cultures interact and create something belonging to neither side of the line: border culture. In the public sphere, borders tend to expose certain incongruities in a state's cultural and political life; if national culture is the sum of a country's cultural production, border culture is the multiplication of disparate cultures in communication. An international and inter-disciplinary Conference on Borders & Cultures will be held at McGill University, Montreal from February 21-26, 1995. The conference organizers encourage papers from a wide range of disciplines and interdisciplines, from the humanities to the health sciences, from the social sciences to engineering and environmental studies. Such papers may address specific cases, or research methods, or theories pertaining to the study of border culture, and/or should deal with one of four geographic areas: the borders of Canada; the borders of Mexico; the borders of Brazil; and other borders within the Americas.
