SENEGAL: Arson suspected in the fire at the "Sud FM Sen Radio"
         radio station

ORIGINATOR: West African Journalists Association (UJAO), Dakar


Arson is suspected in a 5 October 1994 fire at the "Sud FM Sen
Radio" private radio station. The room which holds all the
telephone and electrical wiring linking the studios of the
station to its transmitter and the services of the "Sud
Communication" group was set on fire.

The press freedom monitoring arm (SDLP) of the UJAO denounced
this criminal act, calling it a flagrant attack against press
freedom and freedom of information. The perpetrator(s) and those
who ordered the fire made an attempt to silence the voice of "Sud
FM". SDLP/UJAO expressed its solidarity with the "Sud
Communication" group which promotes "Sud FM Sen Radio" and
publishes the "Sud quotidien" daily.

SENEGAL: Incendie criminel a la station de radio "Sud FM Sen
         Radio"

INITIATEUR: Union des Journalistes de l'Afrique de l'Ouest
            (UJAO), Dakar


Le 5 octobre 1994, la salle ou se trouve le coeur des dispositifs
telephonique et electrique connectant les studios de la station
privee "Sud FM Sen Radio" a l'emetteur et aux services centraux
du groupe "Sud Communication" a fait l'objet d'un incendie
criminel.

Le comite de la Surveillance et defense de la liberte de presse
(SDLP) de l'UJAO denonce cet acte odieux, qui constitue une
atteinte grave a la liberte de presse et eu pluralisme de
l'information. Le(s) auteur(s) ou le(s) commanditaire(s) de ce
sabotage ont essaye de faire taire une voix, celle de "Sud FM".
SDLP/UJAO exprime sa solidarite envers le Groupe "Sud
Communication", promoteur de "Sud FM Sen Radio" et editeur de
"Sud quotidien".
