Congratulations, APAL!

After more than a dozen years of broadcasting without a licence,
Martinique's Radio Ase Plere an Nou Lite (APAL) received one from
the French authorities in January.

Radio APAL, whose name is Creole for "Enough crying, to our
struggle", chose not to submit an application to the French
regulatory body because applying for a licence would mean implicit
acceptance of France's authority over the Caribbean nation's
airwaves. Martinique's independence from France has been the
subject of much debate since the 1970s.

During its first years, Radio APAL's signal was occasionally
jammed, the station's electricity was cut numerous times, and once
the volunteers had to physically defend the equipment.

While the station did not ask for the licence, it has chosen to
accept it. According to the French authorities, the licence was
granted because of APAL's historical presence on the airwaves.
