For those unaware, the Weekly Mail & Guardian is one of South Africa's leading newspapers. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 10 Jun 94 13:55:53 SAS From: tim jenkin <ancdip@WN.APC.ORG> Subject: ANC PR on the interdict against the Weekly Mail by the Minister of Defence ANC PRESS STATEMENT ON THE INTERDICT AGAINST THE WEEKLY MAIL BY THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE It is regrettable that one of the first actions taken by the new Minister of Defence has been to interdict the Weekly Mail & Guardian in an effort to prevent publication of further information on operatives of the totally discredited Directorate of Covert Collections. ANC policy is unequivocally for full disclosure of past covert actions, and exposure of the dirty tricks conducted against the democratic movement. We have conducted our struggle to achieve a democratic and open society. South Africans voted for a fully transparent process of government. We are therefore concerned that this principle is being compromised by the Minister of Defence's attempt to interdict the Weekly Mail and Guardian. In keeping with our commitment to democratic norms, public accountability and open government, we urge the Ministry to withdraw the interdict and drop the case being heard in the Pretoria Supreme Court without delay. In addition, no further actions using the Defence or Freedom of Information Acts should be taken pending their re-evaluation. It is necessary to point out that it was only as a result of the Goldstone Commission's investigations that the existence of the DCC was brought to light. Furthermore, the report of the Steyn Commission, which was established to conduct further investigations into its activities, has never been made public despite repeated requests by President Mandela.
