A NEWBORN IN AFRICA: ZAIRE'S RADIO MAENDELEO

Only a short time ago Zairians informed us of their newborn rural
radio in Bukavu, in the eastern province of Sud-Kivu. Radio
Maondeleo, meaning "development," is the result of efforts by
twelve non-governmental development organizations that have worked
together in the province since 1987 to create this new
communication tool. Its first programs were broadcast in
September.

Radio Maendeleo currently employs eleven people, including five
journalists. It broadcasts on FM for about six hours every day.
Due to its location in the mountains, Radio Maendeleo can also be
picked up by listeners in neighboring Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

Radio Maendeleo's broadcasters would like to establish contacts
with other radio stations for the purpose of sharing information,
programs, documents and experiences.
