"Public hostility to the media may be engendered not because
people think the press has become too powerful, but because
they may feel that it has not exercised its power in the
         public interest."

These words by James Aronson in his book, _The Press and the Cold War_,
have never been more timely than they are today.

The jurors of the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism are
seeking nominations of journalism inspired by clear ideals of the public
good for consideration for the 1998 James Aronson Award for Social Justice
Journalism.

The awards honor Aronson, a professor of journalism at Hunter College,
former reporter for the Boston Evening Transcript, New York Herald Tribune,
New York Post and New York Times, who was editor from 1949 to 1967 of the
crusading newsweekly, The National Guardian.

We seek journalism that Jim Aronson would have pointed to as what is best
in the American press: reporting that measures the conduct of government
and business against clear ideals of social justice. Stories can involve
matters of race, economic injustice or civil liberties in domestic or
foreign areas.

Although journalists often say they work to "comfort the afflicted and
afflict the comfortable," in practice they too often ignore values of
social justice out of fear of appearing partisan.

The Awards counter this tendency by locating and celebrating serious,
significant, courageous and technically excellent investigate reporting
that combines professional skill with critical perspectives and social
concern for the broader interests of society.

Past prize-winning stories have anatomized such issues as the waning power
of workers, police brutality, global U.S. arms sales and their baneful
social costs at home, and the abuses of U.S. policy in Haiti and Indonesia.
One common denominator of all these stories is that they investigate the
misuse of power by the powerful.

The Award is administered by a committee of journalists and media critics
and the Hunter College Department of Film and Media Studies, where James
Aronson taught for more than 10 years.

Nominees' names and work samples should reach us by Jan. 15, 1998.
Eligible are individual journalists or teams whose work has appeared in
U.S. newspapers, magazines or newsletters between January 1 and December
31, 1998. Submissions may consist of an individual article, essay, or
series. Editors of mid- and large-circulation papers submitting
self-nominations are asked to send 11 copies of the story.

Please mail entries to the attention of Peter Parisi, Department of Film &
Media Studies, Hunter College, 695 Park Ave., New York, NY 10021.
