Hello,
You always have such provocative questions on this listserve........
The folks at The Radio Project (a coalition of media activists, and
producers of the syndicated "Making Contact" radio magazine) -- in
California, probably the Bay Area, have published a couple of excellent
books about this very subject.
Two authors -- something Solomon, and I've forgotten the other, wrote:
THROUGH THE MEDIA LOOKING GLASS (last year)........and a follow up book
this year. The book is sitting on my shelf unread....so whether they
offer *solutions* or not, I'm not sure, but they certainly articulate the
problem well.
The Media Foundation in Canada, publishers of the hard-to-find, but truly
excellent, magazine ADBUSTERS, are definitely committed to solution
finding. They are big promoters of anti-TV television campaigns, of
guerilla anti-advertising billboard graffiti....they must have some
excellent articles available........and they're online! (sorry, don't
have the address handy)
Also, you might want to contact the National Federation of Community
Broadcasters (NFCB) -- since supporting non-commercial, grassroots media
is their core effort, they must have some dandy articles available as
well.
Good luck with your research, sounds like a fantastic topic!
