The recent query (actually, Avi's reply) re problems of "renumbering" pushes me over the edge into an obsevation: A large amount of the traffic on ENDNOTE-L seems be from users who are using EndNote as a database manager, and for whom the purpose for which it was designed, formatting in-text citations and building style-sheet-correct bibliographies, is not much of a concern. I have a certain amount of sympathy for people trying to manage large reprint files etc., and I have no problem w/ suggestions that EndNote, where it's feasible (a very elastic word!), change to accomodate such needs. But Niles is NOT competing with NOTIS and record numbers are NOT serial numbers, even if they look like them. In sum, my sense of what I read on this list is EndNote is being used in new ways; that's fine, and good, but also means that people posing "problems" to Niles should start w/ some awareness that those whose develop new uses for an application can't expect the designers of the application to have foreseen all their needs!
