We recover dasd space from inactive users, but we use VMARCHIVE. The files are archived for two years and then the userid is removed from the directory. VMARCHIVE is better than VMBACKUP because it has the mechanism to keep track of how long files should be preserved and the mechanism to purge them when they expire. Our process is mostly manual, I think we use the VMRMUA utility to identify users who have not used their userids in 500 days.
