From: JUDITH HOPKINS AT SUNY BUFFALO <ULCJH%UBVMS.BITNET@UBVM.cc.buffalo.edu>
LITA DISTRIBUTED SYTEMS AND NETWORKS INTEREST GROUP, Sunday,
1/24/93, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m., Radisson Hotel, Columbine Room.
The topic for discussion was "Teaching the Internet" and it
was obviously one of interest for about 100 people showed up.
Jean Armour Polly, Manager, Network Development and User Training
at Nysernet, talked about the teaching aids that Nysernet is
developing. They have a Help Desk (HELP@NYSERNET.ORG) and a
Training Gopher (Telnet to NYSERNET.ORG and log in as Nysernet).
She handed around a notebook that they are preparing for sale
that lists Internet resources.
She said that the National Science Foundation has just
funded an Internet Network Information Center (Internet NIC) for
five years as a service to midlevel networks and campuses. The
plan is for the NIC to come out with discipline-specific training
and information packets. The NIC will also provide CD-ROMs with
basic information to campuses. The charges for these services
has not yet been determined, but FTP access will be free.
ALA has requested funds under LSCA Title 3 to provide all
public libraries in the U.S. with access to the Internet; the
estimated cost is $75 million. Someone from Washington State
reported that at the initiative of the State Library there
efforts are underway to bring all public libraries and community
colleges in the state to the Internet.
Connie Chandler, Manager, Reference Systems and Services,
Bibliographic Center for Research, Auraria, Colorado was the
second speaker. She teaches classes around the country and
distributed a Checklist for Internet Trainers Going to Other
Sites (appended) on which she commented.
After these two presentations various persons present
described their own activities. The University at Delaware
Libraries have six dedicated terminals for Internet access. The
Computing Center is training all library staff to use the
Internet.
Barbara McAdam (The University of Michigan) said that a
seminar for sophomore honors students entitled "Structure of
Inquiry in the Information Age" includes a week's component on
the Internet. For more information contact her; her Internet
address is: USERGBPC@UMICHUM.UM.EDU
Anne Lipow (formerly a trainer at Berkeley and a co-
author of "Crossing the Internet Threshold" which is addressed to
trainers) described three levels of training:
1. Show and Tell. 1.5 to 3 hours. Goal is to whet the
appetite. It helps to have a homogenous audience.
2. Hands-on. Requires special facilities and a teaching
assistant for every 7-10 students. Handouts should be provided
beside each terminal.
3. In-depth sessions devoted to single topics, e.g.,
Telnet, the UNIX environment, FTP. She and her fellow authors
are preparing a supplement to their book which would focus on the
needs of trainers at this third level.
There is a network trainers discussion list (which is hosted
by the UB Computing Center): NETTRAIN@UBVM.
