For those who inquired about the EXAC software which allows one user
to control the computers of others.
There are quite a number of such software on the market, notably
Lan Close-Up, PC Anywhere, PC Tools Commute, etc. The one that
we preferred both in terms of features and price is called EXAC.
We bought it one or two years ago for a few hundred U.S. dollars.
PC Magazine made a review of all that type of software. We felt
that EXAC met most of our expectations. The software works under
Dos 3.1 (or higher) with a bunch of swithces on the command line.
(In other words, you type EXAC /b+ /R- or such cryptic commands)
It doesn't work under Windows (we may need this feature soon!) although
we didn't try too hard to make it work (we didn't even
call the company!)
The latest phone numbers I have is:
310-553-2808 (in California)
We have version 1.4 - A description of the product can be the following:
- EXAC is a software package that allows a PC in a local area network
to access any other PC on the same network. From one workstation, you
can access another and monitor its screen in the same way as if you
were in front of it. (A colleague uses another copy of EXAC on another
network (which is a bus trip away from his regular office) to manage
that remote network completely.)
On the other hand, you can select one particular screen on the network
and broadcast that particular to all other computer screens on the
network. This is great for hands-on demo. Once the demo is done, you
can let the people experiment themselves.
You can also have more than one screen interact at the same time.
Example: person A types something and both A and B see it; then
person B types and both A and B sees it.
Summary:
^^^^^^^
At least four applications are possible:
- Education: a) you can constantly monitor the screen of each student
while the students are working.
b) You can broadcast to others, your own screen or somebody
else's screen. Each student could switch between the
broascasted image or his own screen.
- Network Support: if a user reports a problem, help is a few keystrokes
away.
- Multitasking: if some PCs are inactive, you can use one to execute
a particular application, another for other application,
etc.
- Development: you test your application from your own PC using many
machines.
