I am a faculty staff member at an Australian University. I and a number of
my colleagues are also filed under ~ (tilde or "squiggle") after the domain
name. It is simply the strucure set up for the server to store the various
webpages of the different members of the teaching staff. I use this server
area for my teaching, and I am loathe to think that my Information
Resources NetSites webpage at
http://www.fit.qut.edu.au/~sylvia/teaching/resources.html is irrelevant to
others, or a "poor" example simply because it is stored after a tilde
directory structure.

Cheers from Australia.
