I think perhaps it might help to understand WHY some of us use free
services. I think I mentioned this previously, but for us little
folks if we become more successful in terms of generating visits, we
run the risk of bankrutpcy on metered service (the norm here is 500
megs per month) which is right now about 1/5 of what is going through
my sites.

I CAN'T do what I do on pay sites. Can't afford it. If people decide
not to visit because I use xoom or tripod, etc, then it really is
their loss because what I do is a free service to managers,
governments, etc. We make huge amounts of articles, books and
materials available free, even though some of those same materials,
we make our living with (partly).

What really concerns me (and this is the point), is not so much what
individuals do, but what the search engines do. My understanding and
experience is that if I create two identical sites, one at my pay
site and one at a free one, and promote them to the search engines
exactly the same way, that the pay site will get into the engines,
while the free ones may or may not (depends on the engine).

I understand the issue and the transience of many free sites, and in
fact will not patronize a few free sites that have a record as spam
havens or pirated material hosters. Still, I AM legitimate. I have
been on the net for years, but get tarred by the same brush.
