For many years, I used the laws of sines and cosines, but found that the use of components made it easier as the method was consistent with the the independence of perpendicular components in such situations as conservation of momentum and free body problems. I will allow students to use either method, but most find that (after practice) that the component method seems to fit easiest with the physics ( Yes, I am using math as a tool for physics). With regards to calculus, I may mention it briefly in my honors course if some students are taking it, primarily because there is a very good working relationship with the calculus teachers. Hope this helps Harold Lefcourt Morris Knolls HS hbl@aip.org
