Hi George,
In the list servers you requested information about handbooks dealing with
the DoD software specs, i.e., DoD-STD-2167A (Development) and DoD-STD-2168,
(Software Quality Assurance).
There are two military handbooks currently associated with the specs, and
(in my opinion) are very well written and understandable. The responsible
agencies actually hired a contractor (Logicon, San Diego) to write the
handbooks... the draft versions were much more informative, but were
trimmed down for the final release.
The handbook for dealing with DoD-STD-2167A is identified as MIL-HDBK-287,
"MILITARY HANDBOOK
A Tailoring Guide for DOD-STD-2167A, Defense System Software Development"
and the handbook for dealing with Software Quality Assurance is called,
MIL-HDBK-286, "MILITARY HANDBOOK
A Guide for DOD-STD-2168 Defense System Software Quality Program."
I've seen several drafts of support documents for the specs, but I haven't
seen anything release yet other than the above.
Please remember MIL-STD-498 is about to superceed DoD-STD-2167A and DoD-STD-
7935, "DOD Automation Information Systems (AIS) Documentation Standards,"
in the next few months. In addition, DoD-STD-2168 has had a rev A draft
floating around for about two years now, but further review and release are
apparently on hold until MIL-STD-498 is released and the industry systems
of control stabalize.
All of the above (released) specifications and handbooks are available from
the Navy's documentation center in Philadelphia. I have heard rumors of
text versions (ASCII I suspect) available at the Software Technology
Support Center at Hill Air Force Base. If anyone is interested in access
let me know and I'll try to find the FTP address for you and post it.
Stan
