Beverly,
I, too, agree that his sample is biased possibly due to lack of
knowledge or the naivete of youth.

Restating the underlying components:
Managers and organizations say the collective abilities of individuals is
better than the sum of the individual efforts.
Individuals work together through some cooperative effort, sometimes
called teams.
If these groups of like-minded individuals are to be successful as a
whole, then an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust must exist.
In most organizations the available pool of funds (either pay raises or
bonuses) is finite and limited (frequently known to all in advance).
Man or woman generally having unsatiable desires for more seeks to
optimize the individual financial position through the delivery of
perceived value to the judging or influencing powers.

THEREFORE, the individual position is improved through competition rather
than cooperation. The individual wins, but the organization loses. In
global marketplace, an any organization afford to compromise performance?

FINAL QUESTION: How are we, as educators, helping and guiding our future
leaders to understand and manage these issues?
