In support of those poor souls who have aspired to middle and upper
management positions through their usually hard efforts I offer the
following to the discussion. At the beginning of their careers they were
required to possess certain skills in order to carry out their job
functions. Many excelled and were rewarded by promotion and a monetory
incentive. There was no requirement for training in the attributes required
of a manager such as interpersonal relations, scheduling or any of the many
other requirements. Most promoted people learned on the job, so to speak,
how to manage. I would suggest that if the use of fear is their method they
"may" have learned that from the very persons who promoted them. Managers
are workers too. Deming also said: "Don't blame the worker, blame the
owners of the process namely the senior levels of management."
