I've worked in a factory (as a software systems engineer). They had
'management by intimidation' down to an art. My doctor was always on my
case to quit the job--he had lost too many of his patients who were
employed there to heart attacks. We lost about an engineer a year on the
program I was on (heart attacks, suicide, other stress-related causes)
over a seven-year period. (The program had a staff of 150-250.) I hope
that gives you an idea.

Here's an interesting question:  Is anyone who reads this
list/newsgroup actually employed by a low-skill-type manufacturing
company?  If such a person is present, maybe they could tell us what
such companies are like inside, and what sort of environment such
companies exist in.
