The main problem with having inside people is keeping current on all the
usable software. It is very difficult for a training team to stay current
on all the latest versions of software used in a company.
The main problem with having external trainers is finding people proficient
in the business processes. There are similarities in all business, but
every business (even in the same industry) has unique processes and
procedures.
The biggest challenge for any training organization is finding the proper
balance. The biggest mistake most training organizations make is not
keeping their team trained on the latest versions of the software. The
first training session and sometimes the second training session should
contain people from the training staff. Does not seem cost effective short
term, but the benefit is not measurable long-term.

Becky gave us some good ideas about education and
training. One reason I want to do the education with outside
people is a variant of her prophet statement. I've heard that an
expert is a "guy from out of town". There is a real credibility
issue with inside people. I guess that we are not willing to
believe our colleagues.
One problem with outside people is, of course, that they don't
understand the specific business problems. I hope to use
text books and outside people for education, but will probably
need to supplement this education with specific company
information.
