Nancy Rosenbaum, commenting on my proposal to for a manufacturing school
said,
"That sounds like an exciting project!  However, you might not want to call
it
"school."  There are many people for whom "school" was not a successful
experience.  Those individuals may be resistant to attending or
participating
in your training."

I agree. We have decided to call it the Picker Manufacturing and Quality
Institute
(PM&QI). The name has a bit of history.

Many years ago, before I joined Picker, there was a Picker Quality
Institute (PQI)
which offered courses in TQM, ISO 9000, etc. There was also a Picker
Management
Institute (PMI) which offered courses for management development. PQI was
owned by the Vice President of Quality and Technology while PDI was owned
by
the Vice President of Human Resources. The two organizations merged to form
the Picker Development Institute (PDI) managed in HR. The person who ran
the
program left the company. Subsequently the VP of HR retired. I have been
trying to
get the current HR folk to restart PDI, but they are working a number of
other initiatives
and are reluctant to take on this one. I need the vehicle to support the
Enterprise
Resource Planing  implementation; I'm responsible for designing and
improving
manufacturing processes in a $1.2 billion company.

clearly, we need world class people with solid education and good training
to
handle the ERP installation. since I was a quality manager, I want to
include the
quality aspects of manufacturing.
